iPhone History
In the few short years since its initial release, the Apple iPhone has become one of the most highly sought after mobile devices in history. Ever since the unveiling of the first generation, consumers have loved the device’s sleek, attractive styling and revolutionary features. With each new release, Apple continues to impress shoppers more and more by unveiling features that are completely new in the market. In doing so, they have captivated Apple fans spanning the globe.
The first generation iPhone was unveiled in January of 2007 and first became available to American buyers in June of that year. Though millions were manufactured, Apple still struggled to keep up with demand, and customers waited in line throughout the night just to be the first to get their hands on the hot new device. The first generation iPhone was born from Steve Jobs’ idea of a computer that would be touchscreen based rather than needing a keyboard or mouse. Instead of a computer, the idea was turned into the first iPhone.
Roughly 18 months later, the iPhone 3G was unveiled. Many of the features remained the same, but there were a few key changes that led to more than 1 million sales during the phone’s first weekend on the market. As the name suggests, it supported faster 3G data. It was also the first iPhone to support Assisted GPS. The 3G received a huge upgrade in design as well.
When the iPhone 3GS was released roughly a year later, it was primarily designed for speed. In fact, the S in 3GS stands for speed. In addition to boosting the device’s speed and performance, Apple also increased the camera from 2 MP to 3 MP and added video capability.
The iPhone 4, released in June of 2010, was the first to really offer huge changes. The phone was redesigned to be thinner and completely flat. Made with an aluminum frame with a glass front and back, it looks and feels completely different from earlier generations made from polycarbonate. The camera was upgraded once again to 5 MP and 720p HD recording capabilities. A front facing camera was also added. A gyroscopic sensor, powerful A4 chip and retina display round out the most appealing features of the iPhone 4.
Announced in October of 2011, the iPhone 4S remains similar to the iPhone 4 on the outside. Inside, however, there are several upgrades. The camera has been upgraded to 8 MP, and the device has a better antenna. One of the most popular features, however, is the addition of Siri, which allows users to command their phone using their voice.
The iPhone got another redesign with the release of the iPhone 5 in September of 2012. It is thinner, taller and has a metal back. The screen is also larger. The iPhone 5 is the first to support 4G LTE networks. The latest model uses a smaller dock connector, and it debuts with the new operating system iOS 6. With each release, Apple offers new devices that continue to impress customers and revolutionize the cell phone industry.
