AT&T is one of the best-known names among the many cell phone carriers in existence today. What the majority of people don’t realize is that the history of AT&T and the history of cell phones is almost identical. Alexander Graham Bell started the whole thing back in 1876 with the invention of the telephone. It was a radical scientific development that changed the world. Although telegraphy had been around for a while, to be able to hear an actual voice through a wire seemed almost like magic.
In 1877, Bell and two other men, his financial backers, formed a company called the Bell Telephone Company. The next year, the first telephone exchange was opened in Connecticut. Telephones spread like wildfire and within just a few years, telephone exchanges were licensed in every major city in the United States. Bell continued to refine and develop the technology, spreading into long distance calls and eventually into direct-dial phones. The consumer no longer had to rely on an operator, but could dial straight through.
The Bell Telephone Company went through a number of transitions, eventually becoming the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T. As long ago as 1946, AT&T offered a mobile telephone service. Since there was only one antenna to a region, only about 12-20 calls could be made at any one time in an entire city.
The next year, AT&T engineers came up with the theory of cellular telephones, but just did not have the technology at that time to develop the concept further. It wasn’t until 1983 that AT&T was able to open the first commercial cell phone system. This first system was in Chicago, and like the original telephone, spread rapidly throughout the states and beyond.
AT&T wireless is a separate entity now, but still maintains the forward-thinking ideals of Alexander Graham Bell, and continues to provide excellent service to their customers.
