First Generation Shuffle iPod
First unveiled in January of 2005, the first generation Shuffle iPod is a small digital audio player designed to hold a vast selection of songs and play them back in a random order or the order in which they are saved to the device's memory. It was the first Apple device to include flash memory, and it was the smallest and lightest product in the iPod lineup. It was released as a lower-cost product for consumers who typically used their iPod's shuffle feature when listening to music. Because the first iPod Shuffle does not include all the features of Apple's higher end digital audio players, it comes with a considerably lower price tag. As a result, it quickly became one of the top selling flash based music players in the world in 2004 and 2005.
Unlike other iPods, the Shuffle does not have a display or scroll wheel. It also does not allow users to create playlists or manually select songs. Songs on the device are “shuffled” or played back in a random order or played in the order in which they are loaded on the device. Users do, however, have the ability to skip past songs one at a time. The first generation of the Shuffle iPod also lacks other features such as the games, notes, calendar, alarm, and address book that can be found on other Apple iPod products. Holding an estimated 250 songs, the storage capacity is also significantly smaller.
On the outside, the Shuffle iPod is a very simple device. Weighing in at just 0.78 ounces, it is incredibly lightweight and small. The devices has buttons on the front for Play/Pause, Previous Song/Rewind, and Next Song/Fast Forward. This is also where the volume controls are located. On the back side, there is a switch to turn the device off or select whether music is shuffled or played back in order. There is also an indicator light that displays the battery level. The battery has an approximate life of 12 hours between charges. The Shuffle iPod connects directly to a computer with a USB plug that is hidden beneath a cap. The iPod Shuffle also works as a USB flash drive for storing files. Using iTunes, users can select how much of the memory will be allotted for music storage and how much can be used for file storage.
Because of its low price tag and easy to use design, the first generation iPod Shuffle became an instant customer favorite. It offers the quality consumers have come to expect from Apple at a price that is closer to that of a lower end product, and its simple interface makes it user-friendly even for those who are less than savvy when it comes to technology. Though Apple has released several versions or generations of the Shuffle iPod, many people are still using their original model. If you are one of those people, you can extend your Shuffle iPod's life with affordable top of the line accessories from MyCoolCell.
