The BlackBerry PlayBook
In the past couple years, tablet PCs have exploded on the market and have grown in popularity at an incredible rate. With more and more companies jumping on the bandwagon and adding tables to their lineup of powerful mobile devices, it is no surprise that Research in Motion (RIM) has released the BlackBerry PlayBook. The PlayBook varies greatly from many of its competitors, and this is both positive and negative. While the device is the perfect choice for some users, it may be a disappointment to others.
Out of the box, the BlackBerry PlayBook is a beautiful device with an overall design that is slightly different from other tablets on the market. The 7 inch LCD screen provides stunning colors and excellent clarity, but some of the details in videos are lost in the relatively small screen size. In the past, BlackBerry has not been known as a multimedia powerhouse, but the PlayBook challenges this by offering snappy performance and an excellent platform for viewing photos and videos. It also provides one of the best web browsing experiences of any tablet with full HTML and Flash integration. Web pages load quickly and, most often, flawlessly. The PlayBook also features a 5 megapixel camera that performs much better than lower resolution cameras on other devices. It is capable of capturing high resolution photos as well as HD videos.
There are also areas where the BlackBerry PlayBook falls short. It does not come with native email, contacts, or calendar features. Using BlackBerry Bridge, users can connect to their BlackBerry smartphone to access this data, but it never actually transfers to the device. The PlayBook cannot be synced to other phones or mobile devices. Because of its excellent web browsing capabilities, however, it is possible to access web-based email accounts such as Gmail and Yahoo with ease. RIM has plans to add native email and calendar applications to the PlayBook at a later date, but for now, this is one area where the device is seriously lacking. The number of available apps for the PlayBook also dulls in comparison to the number available for the iPad and Android based products.
All in all the BlackBerry PlayBook is a solid entry to the growing tablet market. For those who are already BlackBerry owners or are looking for a tablet that will primarily be used for web browsing, the BlackBerry PlayBook may be an excellent choice. If you are looking for a device that is fully-functional without syncing to a BlackBerry phone, however, it may be better to look elsewhere.
