We at MyCoolCell like to give cell phone manufacturers the benefit of the doubt. We also really don't like to have to write negative reviews of phones. After all, our business depends upon people owning a variety of different cell phones!
With that being said, we cannot in good faith recommend that you buy a Samsung messaging phone if you are in the market for a new cell phone. We haven't seen very many entry-level Samsung phones that have come out recently that have gotten high marks from their users.
A case-in-point is the Samsung Trender. The Samsung Trender is a slide-out phone offered by Sprint that's a decent messaging phone – but only just decent. For the same price you would pay for the Trender, you could probably get one of Sprint's higher-class phones.
The good news is that the Samsung Trender has a full QWERTY keyboard and is only $30. In some cases, it's completely free with a new Sprint contract. The screen is bright and colorful if a little small, but it looks great as long as you're indoors. Once you go out into the direct sun, though, don't expect to be able to see the screen.
The bad news is that not many users say they like this phone. More than one user has reported that it has a bad habit of pocket dialing, even when it's supposed to be locked. Another strange quirk reported by more than one person is its odd tendency to send texts to the wrong person; you tell the phone to send a text to Bob, but the text actually ends up with Joe instead. This could be a little awkward if you sent a text to Bob to complain about Joe!
Compared to other QWERTY keyboard phones, users also say that the keys are awkwardly spaced and difficult to use. It's also a pretty pokey phone – it won't be winning any speed contests.
Who should get the Samsung Trender? If you want an inexpensive phone that has a QWERTY keyboard and clear call quality, the Samsung Trender might just be for you. You may not need all the bells and whistles, so if price is your number one priority, then the Samsung Trender is a pretty fair deal. However, if you can afford to spend a little bit more on the phone, consider one of Sprint's other phones. There are several Sprint smartphones and messaging phones that easily outpace the Trender and aren't too terribly expensive.
"Trender" is an ironic name for a phone that's so obviously behind the times. However, if you're comfortable with going old-school and aren't ready for a smartphone yet, then it might be trendy enough to suit your needs.
